about our elementary school

St. John’s Area School is a Catholic elementary School of the St. Cloud Diocese located in Foley, Minnesota, serving students from Pre-Kindergarten to grade 6. St. John’s Area School was established the fall of 1963 and is supported by 7 parishes. Families from the towns of Oak Park, Ronneby, Ramey, Pease, Milaca, Santiago, Clear Lake, Becker, Sauk Rapids, Mayhew Lake, and Rice are also welcome to attend SJAS.

The teachers and staff work diligently to plan a productive year for the children in our school. A comprehensive curriculum is in place designed to meet the required State standards as well as Diocesan standards. Parents are encouraged to visit and ask questions.

Parents and families are the primary educators of their children and our goal is to establish an environment that supports you in the development of your child. As a Catholic elementary school, our first goal is to help in the faith development of your child through regular religious instruction and participation in daily prayers and weekly Masses. We strongly believe in the education of the whole child while providing an environment that allows children to experience education in a positive way.

benefits of enrolling

  • Active participation in morning masses on a twice weekly basis, prayer services, daily religion classes, and community service projects in addition to the classroom academic program.

  • Dedicated staff. Our teachers and staff stay updated in educational topics and practices through workshops and in-services. Several of which are Barton trained. Our staff includes four teachers that are recipients of the LEEA (Leadership in Educational Excellence) award, a teacher who is listed as a "Who’s Who Among American Educators" as well as a recipient of the 2012 NCEA Distinguished Teacher award.

  • Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms. Our Pre-Kindergarten program is for 4 and 5 year olds which meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays with a choice of a morning or afternoon class. Kindergarten is an All Day Every Day program.

  • Small class sizes. Classrooms in Kindergarten through 3rd grade are limited to 22 students per class, while 4th through 6th grade are limited to 25 students per class. Currently, the average class size is 15 students.

  • Many extra activities, including field trips, the annual Christmas program, theme days, and Catholic Schools week in January. Students are also offered the opportunity to participate in many sports and other activities through the Community Education Program.

  • Parents are encouraged to volunteer in school during the day and/or help with special events throughout the year.

  • Weekly office newsletters and classroom newsletters keep parents informed. Articles in the Benton County News inform the community of school happenings. SJAS enjoys an open door policy; parents and guardians may call or visit the school office at any time with ideas, questions, or concerns.

  • SJAS participates in the Federal Hot Lunch Program. Students may purchase a meal prepared on site or bring a cold lunch. A milk break is taken each day in the classroom. Milk and lunch tickets are sold in the school office.

  • SJAS enjoys a good working relationship with the Foley Public School District. Qualifying students participate in Special Education, Title I, and Speech programs offered through the Foley Public School District. Students ride District buses to and from school.

  • SJAS is fully accredited through MNSAA (Minnesota Non-public School Accrediting Association) since 1980, most recently in Spring 2013. Reaccredidation takes place every 6 years.
